THIRTY-ONE

Ralph Ellison was sitting in a folding camp chair near the river, holding Unknown’s leash. He had his hand resting on Unknown’s back. He seemed to be looking up at the sunset sky and talking to Unknown about it. On the chair next to him were a bird book and binoculars. He turned as Josie and Sam walked up.

“This girl and I were watching a large raptor that was riding a tight thermal,” he said. “I could only guess what kind of bird. Golden Eagle? It was very high. ‘Turning and turning in the widening gyre.’ It probably climbed a thousand feet before it left the thermal and headed toward El Cap.”

Josie was struck by his quote of the line from Yeats. She didn’t get to comment because he spoke again.

He paused. “Make a decision?”

“We’d like to talk.”

“Okay,” he said.

Josie leaned in close to him and spoke in a whispered voice. “Not here. Over by that cataract where the water makes white noise. And we’d like you to put your phone and any other electronics in our tent. You don’t need to worry about it, we’ll be able to see it from the river.”

Ellison raised his eyebrows. He looped Unknown’s leash around the arm of his chair, pulled out his phone, walked over and put it inside his tent. He came back, picked up his chair and, still holding Unknown’s leash, walked toward the cataract.

Josie and Samantha had already put their phones and Josie’s badge in their tent. They carried their folding chairs over to a place where the water noises were loudest. They all sat. Samantha seemed to study how Unknown responded to Ellison.

“You probably think I’m paranoid,” Josie said in a low voice.

“Either that, or you’re in an extraordinary situation,” Ellison said.

She said, “I’ve been asked by the California Bureau of Investigation to hunt a bank robber and cop killer.”

Ellison showed surprise. “The professor is an L-E-O?”

“LEO?” Josie repeated.

“Law Enforcement Officer.”

“Obviously not,” she said. “I didn’t know the phrase.”

“But you’re employed by the Bureau of Investigation.”

“Maybe employed isn’t quite the right word. They think my knowledge specialty will help find this guy. So they gave me an ID and deputized me.”

“Then you are an L-E-O.”

“Only in principle. I know nothing of the career. Nevertheless, they want me to find this killer.”

“How’re you gonna do that?”

“We’re still working on it. But the Bureau is serious. They issued me handcuffs and shackles. They’re monitoring me. We found out that the ID they gave me has an RFID chip in it.”

Ellison frowned. “What’s that mean, RFID?”

“Radio Frequency…”

“Identification,” Samantha finished. “There are RFID readers that send out radio waves. If a chip comes near, the radio waves bounce off it. Like the machines that read your credit card chip. By the information in the bounced waves, the reader can tell which particular chip it is.”

“Thanks, Samantha,” Josie said. “That was a very good, succinct explanation.”

“Where are the readers?” Ellison asked.

“Practically everywhere,” Samantha said. “FasTrak toll booths, parking lots, mass transit, airports, government buildings.
